Applying to Become a Member Institution

Building diversity within their faculty is a commitment shared by each member of The Consortium for Faculty Diversity at Liberal Arts Colleges because a wide range of faculty experiences and ideas is crucial to fulfilling their teaching and learning missions. Consortium member institutions are also committed to increasing the diversity of the pools of candidates for their tenure-track faculty positions, strengthening the interest of candidates from traditionally under-represented groups in careers at liberal arts colleges, and improving the rate of completion of terminal academic degrees by U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents, members of under-represented groups.

Each of these colleges has a program for appointments of pre-doctoral scholars (who have nearly finished their terminal graduate degrees) and post-doctoral (or post-MFA) scholars. The work of the Consortium is to solicit and provide to member schools applications from qualified graduate students. Currently the consortium accepts applications from U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Member institutions are liberal arts colleges that actively support and develop faculty members as teachers and as artists or scholars.

Those receiving appointments are expected to work on campus for the fellowship year, to participate in departmental and institutional programs such as speaker series and seminars, and interact regularly with students and faculty colleagues. The expectation is that pre-doctoral scholars will complete their dissertations within the year of the fellowship awards.

A Steering Committee of representatives elected by the member institutions governs the consortium. Members of the Consortium have agreed to interview at least one candidate for a CFD fellowship every other year and to strive to make an offer of appointment at least once every three years. Salary and compensation are to be comparable to that which is paid to a full-time visiting faculty member with similar credentials. They have also agreed to offer the following additional benefits.

For Pre-doctoral Fellowships:

  • Teaching equivalent to one semester-long course per year
    • Faculty development and professional expense benefits
  • Teaching and research mentors
  • Faculty office and computer
  • Assistance in finding housing near campus

For Post-doctoral (post-MFA) Fellowships:

  • Teaching up to 60% of a full-time faculty's course load at a host institution
  • Faculty development and professional expense benefits
  • Teaching and research mentors
  • Faculty office and computer
  • Assistance in finding housing near campus

Institutional Membership Inquiry

The Consortium invites institutions interested in joining CFD to contact the host institution and provide a letter of interest, indicating their commitment to the guiding principles of the Consortium and to the program's guidelines. Letters of inquiry should also include a description of institutional commitments to diversity and faculty development programs.

The Steering Committee will screen inquiries and select institutions to invite to provide full applications.
