Outdoor Programs
The Office of Experiential Education at Gettysburg College is home to many exciting programs and services.
In part, the outdoor environment serves as our medium for instruction and program development, however we also utilize many traditional models in creating leadership programs and training seminars. We offer a wide variety of opportunities for the entire Gettysburg College community, as well direct services and trainings for outside organizations.
This year we are sponsoring our in-house programs lead by our own student and alumni facilitators (GRAB Staff) and professional staff to the following locations:
Sea Kayaking the Everglades (January, 2008)
Trekking Tuscany, Italy (May, 2008)
Backpacking West Highland Way, Scotland (May, 2008)
Trekking the deserts of Utah (May, 2008)
Backpacking Olympic National Park (July, 2008)
Sea Kayaking Prince William Sound, Alaska (July, 2008)
Mountaineering Peru (July, 2008)
Trekking the Austrian Alps (September, 2008)
In addition, the GRAB students lead 35 day trips that include sea kayaking, backpacking, climbing, and they assist with over 90 challenge course programs a year.
Become a GRAB leader
Students interested in developing your outdoor leadership skills? Each fall students can participate in a selective hiring process to join the GRAB staff. Training covers topics as wilderness skills, backcountry medicine, group dynamics, which prepare the GRAB students to lead our day trips to our expeditions. Many leaders have utilized their skills after graduation to work for Outward Bound, selected for NOLS instructor courses, manage their own programs in higher education, or have become exceptional lawyers, doctors, and educators.
