Frequently Asked Questions for International Students

  • What expenses are included in "educational costs"?
The term, "educational costs," usually refers to tuition, telecommunication fee, student activities fee, room, board and books.  Students will need addition funds for personal expenses including the health insurance fee (unless you are covered under a family health insurance policy).  Please keep this information in mind as you are completing the financial aid application.

  • Who gets financial aid?
Most financial aid is awarded to families with demonstrated financial need. Aid amounts are linked to a family's financial situation, and aid may be in the form of grants, loans, or employment.
  • If the financial aid award includes Student Employment Program (campus job), how do I find a position?
The Work Study Journal, a list of positions, will be available for review after August 15.  The International Student Advisor, Christopher Fahey, will assist new students in finding a job after they arrive on campus.

International students can only work on campus during the academic year. When classes are in session students can work a maximum of 20 hours a week and during break periods students can work a maximum of 40 hours a week. All students who plan to work must apply for a social security number. This application process is coordinated through the International Student Advisor.

International students at Gettysburg College can work off campus during the summer break and after graduation. Employment off campus during the summer is authorized as Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and employment off campus after graduation is authorized as Optional Practical Training (OPT). Off-campus employment is coordinated through the International Student Advisor.
