Serials Department
Who We Are
- Donna Skekel, Serials/Electronic Collections Librarian (x6895)
- Sharon Reed, Serials Assistant (x7037)
What we do
The Serials Department organizes and provides access to continuing resources in all formats. Databases are cataloged and full-text content access is enhanced through MARC record downloads and editing for searching in MUSCAT. Internet resources are reviewed and added to the collection through serials cataloging. The Serials Department obtains and makes available regularly published journals, magazines, newspapers, annual reviews, yearbooks, conference proceedings, and newsletters or bulletins in print, electronic, and microfilm formats. We provide access to over 30,263 online full-text journals and process over 1,100 print journals, magazines, and newspapers.
Our responsibilities include:
- Cataloging of electronic/print serials, microfilm sets, databases, and Internet resources
- Journal portal maintenance/holdings updates
- Troubleshooting journal access problems
- Providing access to electronic collections/MARC record downloads/enhancements
- Receiving, check-in, and shelving for print subscriptions
- Claiming missing issues and tracking publishing changes
- Preparing, processing, and shipping/receiving journals to/from bindery
- Online access registration
Serials Collection
Serials are found at several different locations throughout the Library:
- The browsable journals area on the main floor of the Library contains current issues of popular magazines, journals, and newspapers shelved by title.
- The compact shelving located on the ground floor of the Library contains current and archival issues of scholarly journals and magazines shelved according to the publication's call number.
- The microfilm cabinets at the back of the ground floor contain newspapers and journals on microfilm, as well as microfilm sets.
- The Library's journal portal, Journal Locator, contains all journal titles (browsable and searchable), available through Musselman Library.
- The Library's online catalog, MUSCAT, is where you will find Internet resources and databases. There is also an alphabetical list of databases on the Library's website for browsing databases.
