Strong in the Sciences

Gettysburg students benefit from close collaboration with professors, often resulting in joint publications in scientific journals. Students also enjoy hands-on use of advanced equipment that most institutions reserve for graduate students. Facilities include a proton accelerator, electron microscopes, a DNA sequencing instrument, a planetarium, an observatory, a nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer, and laboratories dedicated to plasma physics, optics, psychology, and child development.

Ranging from Argentina to Zimbabwe, Gettysburg College offers nearly 200 off-campus study programs. Opportunities run from year- and semester-long programs at universities around the world to internships at major companies to dual-degree programs with a variety of prestigious institutions. Nearly half of Gettysburg students take part in at least one off-campus programs by the time they graduate.

Community Service

Approximately half of the campus's 2,600 students are involved with community service at any given time. Opportunities range widely, from volunteering for a day at the local homeless shelter to spending spring break cleaning up hurricane damage in New Orleans. Other spring and winter break "immersion" trips include providing meals and outreach to people living with AIDS in New York City or helping with grassroots community development projects like school construction in Nicaragua.

The Arts

The arts are central to the Gettysburg experience. Students participate in a wide variety of performance ensembles, including the Orchestra, Concert Choir, Wind Ensemble, and Marching Band. In 2004 the College's Sunderman Conservatory was founded, which offers a major in music performance. The fully renovated Majestic Theater offers a professional venue for stage performances, and the Owl & Nightingale Players theatrical club is one of the most active organizations on campus. Courses in the visual arts attract students in record numbers, and student work is exhibited regularly. There is also a writing program, which guides students in the craft of both fiction and non-fiction.

Experiential Education

The Gettysburg Recreational Adventure Board (GRAB) provides the Gettysburg College campus community with a wide variety of outdoor opportunities. Programs range from one-day activities to longer trips of hiking, kayaking, climbing, camping, or caving in such places as Dolly Sods Wilderness (W.Va.), Blue Ridge Mountains (Va.), and False Cape State Park (Va.) All programs promote exploration, education, and respect for the natural environment through positive group experiences.

Athletics

Gettysburg College has fielded one of the most successful NCAA Division III athletic programs in the region for many years. That has especially been the case since the College joined the Centennial Conference in all sports beginning in 1993-94. Through the 2005-06 year, Bullets teams have won 74 team conference championships. That number outdistances the second highest total by nearly 30 titles in the conference's 13 years as an all-sports association.
