Prizes and Scholarships
Awards and scholarships awarded or administered by Gettysburg College span the field of Civil War studies, from prestigious accolades for historians and novelists to scholarships that support students and teachers.
- The $50,000 Lincoln Prize recognizes the finest scholarly work on the Civil War era. Winners include historian Doris Kearns Goodwin and filmmaker Ken Burns.
- Numerous scholarships make it possible for for selected undergraduates from across the nation to take part in the Gettysburg Semester, the College's total-immersion program in Civil War studies, and high-school juniors and history teachers to attend the College's annual Civil War Institute.
- The Michael Shaara Award for Excellence in Civil War Fiction honors the memory of the author of The Killer Angels and was established by his son, best-selling author Jeff Shaara. E.L. Doctorow accepted the inaugural prize in 2006 for The March.
