Dedication Day 2008

CWI Ken Burns

The Lincoln Fellowship of Pennsylvania, The National Park Service and Gettysburg College are delighted to announce that the Dedication Day Speaker for November 19, 2008 will be Ken Burns.  To read more about Ken Burns and his accomplishments, click here.   This event has been endorsed by the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission and the PA Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission.

    
   

       

2008 Fortenbaugh Speaker Announced

Catherine Clinton will deliver the Annual Fortenbaugh Lecture for 2008.  The title of her lecture will be The Tears of a President: Lincoln, Empathy and Leadership.  To learn more about her life and accomplishements click here.

New Addition to the Civil War Institute Family

CWI - Tina and Isabella
Tina (Grannie T) with her first grandchild, Isabella Nicole Fair.  Isabella arrived at 1:20 a.m. on August 7 and weighed 8 lbs. 2 oz.  Mom, Dad and baby are fine and Grandma is overcome with joy.

2008 Civil War Institute a Success  

The 2008 Civil War Institue was held June 22 - June 28, 2008.  With over 400 participants, 11 Teacher Scholars and 15 Students Scholars the week was heralded as "the best yet."  Over $12,000.00 was raised through book sales, the raffle and the auction for the scholarship fund.  The scholarship fund enables High School Juniors and Civil War History Teachers to attend the conference and carry back their insights to the classrooms.

CWI at Gettysburg: Act 48 Provider

The Civil War Institute at Gettysburg College was recently approved as an Act 48 Continuing Professional Education Provider through the Division of Professional Development, Bureau of Teaching and Learning Support. Additional information will be posted as it becomes available.


The Journey Through Hallowed Ground

The House of Representatives joined the U.S. Senate in passing legislation to designate the Journey Through Hallowed Ground a National Heritage Area. This Act of Congress recognizes the unparalleled cultural, historic and scenic resources within the entire Journey Through Hallowed Ground corridor and the critically important work of the 150 Partners within the Journey Through Hallowed Ground Partnership. This honor would not have been possible without the leadership of Congressman Wolf, Senator Warner, and the pro bono services of Akin Gump. 2008 Lincoln Prize Awarded on April 1

The 2008 Lincoln Prize was awarded at the Yale Club in New York City on April 1.  It is shared by two outstanding authors.  James Oakes, a professor at City University of New York, for his book The Radical and the Republican: Frederick Douglass, Abraham Lincoln, and the Triumph of Anticslavery Politics (W. W. Norton) and Elizabeth Brown Pryor, diplomat and historian, for her book Reading the Man: A Portrait of Robert E. Lee Thorugh His Private Letters (Viking).

The Civil War Institute at GettysburgCollege, in addition to managing the Lincoln Prize and the Shaara Prize, hosts visiting teachers and students, sponsors conferences, lectures, concerts, movie premiers, and other educational programs on Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War.  We also co-sponsor Dedication Day with the Lincoln Fellowship of PA.
