Floor Hockey

Hauser field house witnessed one of the most improbable intramural stories of all- time when a fantastic captain, Justin Crouse, led a dismal 3-5 squad into the playoffs; a team that was outscored 53-21 during the regular season along with receiving 2 of their 3 wins via forfeits.  Entering Wednesday night's opening frame of coed playoff action, Captain Fantastic and the War Kittens had a lot of unanswered questions: ‘Can we win if another team shows up?' and one can only assume they must have pondered ‘Why do foxes steal golf balls?'  The answers proved to be an emphatic ‘Yes!', and ‘We can only speculate that evolution plays a significant role.'

Turning aside the aging and brutally unathletic Dave's a Killer by a 6-4 count landed them a spot on the championship stage against perennial coed contenders, Come get a taste.  Duplicating the previous night's score, 6-4, Captain Fantastic and the War Kittens managed to put together something that eluded them for the previous 4 weeks, a winning streak.  A hard fought 3 periods and crucial last minute penalty committed against one of the ‘War Kittens' sealed the Cinderella story and brought the class of 2012 their first set of IM Championship t-shirts.

On the other end of the spectrum, the Men's final restored an illustrious and storied club to their rightful place on top of the Intramural Floor Hockey pedestal.  What the Green Bay Packers were to the 1960's NFL landscape only barely describes how TKE has dominated Gettysburg College Intramural Floor Hockey since their inception in 1873.  A one year respite at the hands of last year's league, and Orange & Blue Cup champs (Sgt. Grumbles) left TKE hungry to hang another banner in the rafters, shooting for 6 out of the last 7.

For a fraternity established with the sole intention of dominating intramural floor hockey, anything less than a championship is viewed as a failure to the fan base.  Standing in their way was a seasoned FIJI squad who hoped to carve out their own piece of Intramural history.  Led by Dave Frascarelli, FIJI looked to avenge an October 20th meeting that left them on the wrong end of a 3-2 count.  Unfortunately for FIJI, their tough road through the playoffs seemed to take its toll.  While TKE had the luxury of resting players and adjusting shifts to gear up for the championship, FIJI was engaged in two wire to wire hockey games leading to the final.  Ultimately TKE managed to hold off a late surge and batten down the hatches for a 4-3 win and the chance to hoist this year's cup.
