Africana Studies Majors

Keep it current...

William Green, Class of 2009
Major: Africana Studies
Minor:History
Concentration: Elementary Education
Hometown: Philadelphia, PA

William Green was born and raised in inner-city Philadelphia where he graduated from a predominately African American high school.  As a freshman here at Gettysburg College he decided to become an Africana Studies Major after completing his First Year Seminar on Race, Gender, and Economic Outcomes.  He became interested in the insight he gained from that course about historic issues that still face the African American Community as well as other descendents of the African Diaspora.  As a major he has studied abroad in South Africa where he took courses in African History, Society, and Disease as well as an Ethnomusicology course of the African Diaspora.  He had the opportunity to help write a local NGO's history in a public history format. In addition to loads of traveling the country, including Southern Mozambique, he spent a vast amount of time volunteering at a local preschool in the Joza Township in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. This semester he was fortunate to participate in a service-oriented trip in Baltimore, where he observed different school reform models in schools that have a majority African American student body.  In Baltimore he was able to facilitate a group of middle school students in a college and career institute, where they focused on the success of minorities in post-secondary education.  Through this experience he honed his interests in history, African-American studies, and education to teach in the urban education sector.
