Mission Statement

People LookingThe Schmucker Art Gallery at Gettysburg College seeks to enrich the cultural life on campus, in the community, and throughout the region. The Gallery's goal is to organize and mount challenging and diverse exhibitions composed of student works, works from the permanent collection, borrowed works, and recently produced works by emerging contemporary artists. These exhibitions and the programming which accompanies them (lectures, artist gallery talks, class visits, etc.) are intended to deepen the understanding of art, both historical and of our time, and to complement the college's visual arts curriculum and other interdisciplinary academic programs. The Gallery is a place where new ideas are explored, and where students are encouraged to discover, through the close study of actual objects, the past and continued cultural importance of artworks and art making. In addition, the Gallery serves as a training ground for student workers interested in pursuing a career in gallery administration or other museum-related fields.
