What Types of Jobs Are Available?
Support Staff Positions:
There are approximately 300 support staff positions at the College performing a wide variety of work ranging from administrative, clerical, office, skilled crafts, security, maintenance to food service. Full-time support staff are provided an excellent benefits program. Some of the benefits include vacation and sick leave, holidays, medical, dental, vision and life insurance, pension, tuition assistance for employees and dependents, plus many others
Temporary Positions:
The College also employs temporary employees to assist with short-term and emergency needs related to employee leaves of absence and seasonal needs like registration, book rush, and special projects. Temporary employment may provide you with an opportunity to refine your knowledges, skills and ability while becoming familiar with the College. These vacancies are not always advertised because of the emergency situations associated with such placements. In addition, we use Adecco Temporary Services for temporary placements.
How Are Job Openings Advertised?
Each vacancy announcement includes the job title, the department, a brief description of the job duties and qualifications, and the closing date.
Normally, support staff positions are advertised in the classified section of Gettysburg Times on Saturdays, and in the Hanover Evening Sun on Sundays. Positions requiring more extensive recruitment are advertised in additional newspapers and publications.
Vacancies are posted at various locations on campus, including the Pennsylvania Hall (outside the Human Resources Office), College Union Building, West Building, Musselman Library, Dining Center and Bream/Wright/Houser.
How Do I Apply for Employment?
Gettysburg College uses a direct application procedure. A separate Gettysburg College application for employment or resume with cover letter must be completed for each job for which you apply; photocopies are acceptable with an original signature. The fax number is (717) 337-6624. You should follow up by mailing or delivering the original application materials as soon as possible afterwards. What Information Should I Include on My Application for Employment?
Before applying for an advertised vacancy, you should carefully read the vacancy announcement to be sure that you are interested in and possess the required qualifications for the position. Be aware of any conditions of employment (such as work schedules, shift work, etc.), so that you apply only for the positions in which you are really interested. For support staff vacancies, complete an application for employment for each position for which you want to be considered. If you are interested in applying for a number of positions, prepare your application for employment without filling in the job title or signing the form. Then you may photocopy this application and complete the job title line and enter your signature.
You should describe in detail all your training and experience, including both paid and volunteer, being careful to complete all sections. Emphasize any qualification you have that are described in the vacancy announcement. You should also describe any internships, practicum experiences and field or laboratory experiences gained through work or education and training. For example, if you are applying for an Office Administrator position, describe duties performed in any secretarial experience you have had, software applications in which you are proficient, keyboarding or other skills, and related course work and training, etc. For applications in the service maintenance of skilled crafts areas, describe any apprenticeship programs or classes you have taken in any of these areas.
