Welcome

"An education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire."
--William Butler Yeats

Gettysburg College is a uniquely American institution. It was born of democratic values, strong optimism, and the firm conviction that only a liberal arts education fully awakens and prepares people to lead lives of enlightened contribution to a free society. As such, the College also reflects the American spirit of volunteerism and philanthropy. In a very real sense, the College is a gift that has been passed down from visionary founders to each succeeding generation.

Being independent, the College has no call on the public purse. To achieve our mission, we must rely on gifts to bridge the gap between our tuition and the actual cost of delivering a great education. These gifts assure that no Gettysburg College student ever pays the full cost of his or her education. Each receives a hidden scholarship from gifts large and small that bridge that gap. It is the responsibility of all whose lives are touched by the College to do what they are able to pass it on stronger and more secure to those who come after. Each of us has the capacity to be a visionary Gettysburgian through our stewardship and support.

There are many different ways to support Gettysburg College through gifts of time, talent, and treasure. In these pages you can discover opportunities to make a difference in the lives of the young people who live and study here. However you contribute, you can be sure that your support is a good investment in helping us to light the fire in our students as we prepare them for lives of leadership and service in our society. I invite you to join us in this great work.
