Respecting Individual Student Expectations about Alcohol (R.I.S.E.)
Gettysburg College offers Substance-Free housing through the R.I.S.E. program (Respecting Individual Student Expectations about alcohol). Students who participate in this program make a commitment to a substance-free lifestyle - no alcohol consumption and no smoking. Upperclass students are eligible to live in the RISE theme house, West Hall, and are required to meet all rules and bylaws of the community.
Students wishing to live in the RISE house must have a clear judicial record and zero points. A Residence Life staff member lives in the house and works with upperclass residents and first-year RISE students, planning substance free social programs for the community. Students are expected to be active and contributing member of the house.
As part of this program, the Office of Residence Life makes every effort to assign First-Year students who agree to participate in the program to live with another member of R.I.S.E., and students will have an opportunity to participate in activities with other R.I.S.E. members. There is also a R.I.S.E. house for upperclass students who wish to continue participating in this program.
Although First-Year students are not of legal drinking age, we recognize that college students lead independent lives and some choose to use alcohol regardless of the law. We also realize that alcohol use may impact the quality of the roommate experience. Students who do not abide by their substance-free commitment are subject to relocation in addition to sanctions through our campus judicial system.
Questions regarding the RISE application or housing selection process, should be directed to Nikki Batt at nbatt@gettysburg.edu.
